Uruguayan Abreu extends world record with 30th and 31st club - Comes up against his son
World record holder Sebastián Abreu, nicknamed El Loco, will continue his career in 2021. The 44-year-old striker has confirmed his next two destinations in one step, announcing his clubs number 30 and 31. The former Uruguay international will start playing for Athletic Club in Brazil, with whom he will compete in the Campeonato Mineiro national championship from the end of February following the side’s promotion.

The newly-promoted club confirmed a verbal agreement with the veteran. In the Primera División, Abreu will then meet his son Diego, who signed his first professional contract with rivals Defensor Sporting Club on Monday. However, Defensor are not yet assured of staying in the top division.
During his long career, Abreu was active mainly in South and Central America, but in the meantime also played in Spanish LaLiga for Deportivo La Coruna and Real Sociedad. He also played in Greece for Aris Thessaloniki and in Israel for Beitar Jerusalem. In total, the Uruguayan has been active in eleven countries on three different continents.
Abreu, who scored 26 goals in 70 international matches, was in the spotlight especially at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. In Uruguay’s quarterfinal against Ghana, the striker scored the decisive goal in the penalty shootout to make it 4-2 – with a so-called Panenka. Abreu has also managed Santa Tecla and Boston River in 2019 and 2020 already.
