Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano in advanced talks with MLS expansion team San Diego FC: Sources
MLS expansion club San Diego FC is in advanced talks to sign Mexico star Hirving “Chucky” Lozano from PSV, sources briefed on the situation tell The Athletic.

San Diego is expected to pay a transfer fee of around $12 million to the Dutch club if the deal gets done, sources add. Lozano would become San Diego’s marquee signing ahead of their debut MLS season in 2025.

The deal is not done yet, but sources say San Diego hopes to have it completed and announced before kickoff of this summer’s Copa América, where Lozano figures to be a key player with Mexico.

Lozano, 28, has 70 caps with Mexico and is viewed as the national team’s biggest active star. He re-joined PSV last summer from Napoli and has six goals and three assists in 21 appearances as the club has all but officially won the Dutch league title.

The winger broke through at CF Pachuca to begin his career then joined PSV in 2017, where he became a star and earned a move to Napoli. Lozano excelled in Naples, helping guide the club to its first league title since 1989-90, when Diego Maradona was starring for the team.

San Diego has signed three players so far— Young American goalkeeper Duran Ferree plus Danish veterans Jeppe Tverskov and Marcus Ingvartsen. The latter duo currently play for San Diego’s sister club FC Nordsjælland and will join ahead of preseason kicking off in January of 2025.

The club still hasn’t yet named a sporting director or a head coach, though The Athletic reported earlier in April that they are in advanced talks with AS Monaco technical director Carlos Aviña Ibarrola for the former position. The club recently announced the hire of Alianza de Futbol founder Joaquin Escoto as the head of its academy program.
